Late picked for sweetness, the quality of fruit which merits bottling as a Spätlese, must show the capacity for extended age and development. Richly sweet when enjoyed as an early wine, Spätlese evolve into a cornucopia of fruit flavours and bottle aged characters. The wines of Scharzhofberger originate from a unique mesoclime between Wiltingen and Oberemmel, separated from the greater Saar district by a small tributary which delineates the elite little precinct. A few hectares of vine, yield Riesling of extraordinary richness, regal splendour and intense, dulcet charm.

The stately vineyard at Scharzhofberger covers some thirty hectares of challenging, steeply sloped terrains, its perfect exposures mark it as an exceptional Riesling site without peer. Egon Muller IV retains a quarter of this invaluable terroir, much of the fruit is allowed to achieve a perilous level of ripeness before harvest.
